What Is Sleep Apnea?
“Sleep apnea” refers to a sleep disorder that is characterized by abnormal pauses during breathing or instances of shallow breathing while asleep. These pauses are referred to as “apnea” and the shallow breathing occurrences are referred to as “hypopnea”. Sleep apnea is most often diagnosed via an overnight sleep test, known as a polysomnogram, also called a “sleep study.”
Sleep Apnea Types
There are 2 main types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive sleep apnea: This is the most commonly seen type of sleep apnea and occurs when throat muscles relax.
Central sleep apnea: Occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
Treatment
Dr. Tony Schneider offers treatment for sleep apnea patients through the use of oral appliances. Oral appliances resemble the mouth guards worn by athletes such as boxers and football players. However, the oral appliances used in the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring are specifically designed for that purpose. The appliance is worn during sleep and work by positioning the jaw slightly forward of its usual resting position. The majority of patients require nothing more than this small change to keep the airway open during sleep and provide relief.
